01 · Tear-off
Old field coming off. The wood underneath is what we came to see.The existing shingles and underlayment come off. Overlay is a different, lesser job — and we will name it if that is what is proposed.
The system
We do not explain a roof with a mood photo. The cut shows order. The sequence shows how it is built. The close-ups show what the names actually look like.

In this photo
New charcoal field on the lower slope. Gray underlayment still open toward the ridge. Bundles staged at the peak. The top is last because water runs downhill.
The spec
Scroll. The picture changes to the real piece — OSB, drip metal, ice membrane, underlayment, shingle, gutter. The caption names what is in the frame. The list on the right stays with you.

In this photo · 01 Deck
OSB — compressed wood flakes, sheet seams, nail heads, a chalk line. The open corner shows the rafters this deck is nailed to. Nothing else is on it.
Air under this stack is a separate subject. How the attic is supposed to breathe.
The job
How we treat you is on process. This is the roof. Each frame is captioned for what is in it.

01 · Tear-off
Old field coming off. The wood underneath is what we came to see.The existing shingles and underlayment come off. Overlay is a different, lesser job — and we will name it if that is what is proposed.

02 · Deck
OSB sheathing, seams, nails, chalk line. Soft sheets come out before anything new goes on.If the deck is worse than the estimate, we stop and talk. New shingles do not heal rotten wood.

03 · Ice & water
Black granular membrane stuck to the deck. The white strip is the release film. This is the eave backup for ice dams.Typical in metro Detroit at eaves, valleys, and penetrations. It seals around the nail.

04 · Shingles up
Nail gun on the nailing zone. Charcoal field below. Gray underlayment still open above — the roof is built uphill.Starter at the eave, then courses to the ridge. Offset joints. The pattern on the wrapper, not a crew habit.

05 · Ridge
Cap pieces folded over the peak, field closed. This is the last weather layer on the slope.Ridge cap over a vent does not pinch the slot shut. Magnets, gutters, walkthrough after.
Materials we install
Not a manufacturer’s manual. Not local code. Not a quote. Some houses need a flashing repair, not a replacement. We would rather say that.
A visit is to look — then say what we saw, what we cannot see yet, and what the job would include.
